Salt Makes It Taste Better...

<

Holding hands, clammy palms and all
Nervous unsure fingers refusing to let go
Unseen future, hiding heartache, perhaps
Blindly going forth, for this is all you know

Searching eyes, seeking answers, fishing netted
The chase has ended, question is, did you catch her?
A kiss on the cheek is sweet, admittedly
But the salt of her lips makes it taste better

I taste to find it's bland at first, but ALMOST there
A quick glance around the kitchen and I see
The broken and chipped familiar glass dispenser
That converts with a shake or two of salt, shed sparingly

Add a little of this with a pinch of that
Or maybe a splash of milk to make it wetter
Some staples like garlic and pepper and yet
Somehow, salt always makes it taste better

A phrase carelessly tossed by the by
May quickly be a bitter pill to swallow
Pain and heartache follow close behind
And sure as day, regret is sure to follow

Advice we've thoughtlessly tossed aside
Found again somewhere in God's dusty old love letter
Born again, we choose our words carefully
After all, the Bible said salt would make it taste better

Books and index cards, clipped and cut
Neatly filed away for when we have time
Words hoarded and stored and remembered
For one day they'll make me a rhyme

The perfect recipe, whatever it is
Captures the heart and mind in an emotional fetter
The first ingredient, love, life's salt here on earth
For God knows best... yes, salt makes it all taste better
